Honouring Legacies
True wealth extends far beyond investments and balance sheets – it’s as much about the stories we leave behind and the wishes we honour.
This time last year I headed to Belgium to compete in a bicycle race. Before I left, I mentioned the trip to one of my long-time clients during a routine check-in.
He told me about his mother’s brother – a young man from Belfast who was killed in action during World War I in 1915, at just 21 years old. Before his mother passed away, she made him promise to visit her brother’s grave someday. No one in the family had ever made the trip and now, due to my client’s own health challenges, he knew he wouldn’t be able to fulfil that promise himself.
We decided to detour after the race. We drove to Bailleul, found the quiet cemetery and located the grave. Standing there amid the rows of headstones, we spent some time honouring this young lad’s memory. We took photos and videos, which we sent back to my client and his family. It was an honour to play even a small part in closing that chapter for them.
Our unfulfilled plans can affect those who come after us. My client’s mother had a clear wish, but life got in the way. Health issues, distance, and time all conspired against it.
Financial planning isn’t just about accumulating wealth; it’s about ensuring your values, stories, and intentions live on.
