Invest for the memory dividend
This week our family came together in Donegal to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of my parents. We had a blast.
Perfect weather. Sea swimming. Tennis. My son got a fish with a speargun. We watched dolphins playing in the bay. The kids cajoled their grandfather into an early morning sea swim and splashed him mercilessly.
40 years ago my parents took us to Norway – we stayed in a log cabin on the shore of a lake outside Vrådal. Each night dad and I rowed out and set the nets. The sun was still up after midnight. The mosquitos were horrendous. In the morning we retrieved the fish and mum cooked them for dinner. That trip is still paying a memory dividend for me decades later.
I know that my kids won’t forget the time spent on the beach with grandparents and cousins.
Experiences with people we love are invaluable. We don’t regret them.
We regret the ones we didn’t make happen.
Make sure you don’t put off the ones in the back of your head until they become impossible …
