“Dad, how do I buy bitcoin?”
On Friday, as we were getting in the car, Tobin asked, “Dad, how do I invest in Bitcoin?”
Not what I was expecting on the way to tennis! We spent the journey talking about:
• What an asset is – things you own that can grow in value.
• Why time horizon matters – money you might need next month should not be invested the same way as money you don’t need for 20 years.
• Liquidity and access – why it’s important to be able to get to your money when you need it.
Tobin probably (hopefully!) learned more about finance in those 20 minutes than I learned in all my school years.
It’s so important to teach your kids how to make smart money decisions – when they ask about money, lean in.
✅ Answer their questions.
✅ Share your mistakes.
✅ Talk about what you wish you knew when you were their age.
Because those small conversations can turn into lifelong habits that set them up for success.
And just to bring me down to earth, when I picked him up from his tennis lesson I asked if he’d like to listen to one of my podcasts. “No way dad” 😅
